Does Googling Yourself Hurt?

The title in and of itself should give something away. I spent the first half of my life without having heard the word google, so it still sounds funny to me.

Anyway, as an assignment for a course I am teaching, I asked the students to google themselves and write about the results. It was so much fun reading about their experiences, that I thought I should try it too.

No, google, I did not misspell my own name.

I learned a few things from this:

  1. Google really likes my sister’s wedding page for some reason.
  2. There’s some old guy who wears awesome outfits who is also named Tom Tylee.
  3. Careful what you pin to Pinterest, or make it private, or risk sharing your styling aspirations with the world.

There is also a Tom Tylee on Facebook who lives in England, and is quite the partier. I hope no potential employers ever saw his photos of drinking pints and being a lad and thought, “Whoa, can’t hire that Tom-guy. He’s crazy.”

I haven’t been on social media much, and keep meaning to go through and make everything private, but I just can’t seem to get a round to it. Maybe now I can. At least on pinterest. Nobody needs to know that I aspire to be an academic hipster.
