Why is it so hard to find controllers?
Every winter when there is extra time off, below freezing temperatures, and the excitement that is the Steam winter sale, my thoughts turn to gaming. What games have I been wanting to play? What new hardware do I need or at least want to try out? This winter it is about improving the network connectivity in my house with the ultimate goal to try some couch gaming some PC games using the Steam Link, a little-used streaming device from Steam that connects your TV to a PC running Steam.

One necessity for the Steam Link is a good internet connection. As the arcade machine in my basement that hosts most of my Steam games was cobbled together from older budget parts, the only Wi-Fi it has is through a glacially slow USB wi-fi dongle–completely unusable for the link to work. Also in the basement is the 4K Roku TV which, although generally reliable, could also benefit from improved internet connectivity. So time to run some wires.
I ordered a pile of ethernet cable supplies from the best internet supplier of cables (and multiple cheap knock-offs of other products-but that’s a different story) Monoprice. It’s time to run cabling from the modem (hidden in an upstairs closet) down to a router and out to the various computers and streaming devices in the basement.
And finally, the ability to stream! But what the hell is with all the cords, cables, and wires? Also having to dig into the belly of the arcade machine to unplug the corded USB controllers is a pain. So it’s time for wireless controllers. Off to Amazon!
